Used Cars with the Best Gas Mileage

November 18th, 2023 by

There are a lot of factors to consider before you buy a used vehicle. It needs to have enough seats for your family, enough cargo space for your vacations, the right safety features to protect you, and much more. One of the more important factors for any used car is its gas mileage. With the cost of gas always changing, it’s important to choose a used model with great mileage, as this will make owning your car much more affordable. To help you find the right vehicle, below are some of the most fuel-efficient used cars for you to consider.

2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid LE

One of the most fuel-efficient used cars you can find today is the 2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid LE. The 2019 Camry has excellent gas mileage, coming in at an EPA-estimated 51 mpg in the city and 53 mpg on the highway. This is thanks in large part to its hybrid powertrain, something it has in common with other vehicles on this list. The 2019 Camry Hybrid also has an ECO mode and regenerative braking, which add to its efficiency and battery life. All of this is on top of its spacious cabin and comfortable ride, along with numerous interior features.

2019 Honda Accord Hybrid

Another fuel-efficient model from 2019 is the Honda Accord Hybrid. This model uses a 2.0L four-cylinder engine and two electric motors to power the vehicle, along with a lithium-ion battery pack. With this setup, the 2019 Accord Hybrid gets an EPA-estimated 48 mpg in both the city and on the highway. Other premium features you can find in this midsized sedan include automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, an infotainment display, and a host of standard safety features, such as automatic braking and a lane departure warning.

2017 Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid

Next up is another hybrid — the 2017 Hyundai IONIQ. This was the first year that Hyundai released the IONIQ, and it’s since become one of their more popular vehicles thanks to its fuel efficiency. The 2017 model gets an EPA-rated 57 mph in the city and 59 mpg on the highway, which are some of the best fuel-efficiency ratings you’ll find on this list. Even better, the IONIQ is one of Hyundai’s more affordable vehicles, meaning you can often find a used model for a relatively low cost.

2016 Chevrolet Spark

The Chevrolet Spark received a total redesign in 2016, making this a good model to search for when looking for pre-owned options. With the 2016 Chevrolet Spark, you’ll get a small subcompact car that’s a great fit for anyone who wants an affordable ride or who does a lot of city driving. Unlike the previous entries, the Chevrolet Spark is not a hybrid, making it a little more affordable. It’s still great on gas, though, with the EPA giving it an estimated 31 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway when equipped with the automatic transmission.

2013 Volkswagen Jetta

Going back a little further, the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta has two powertrain options available: a hybrid and nonhybrid. What’s great about the 2013 Jetta is that no matter which you pick, you’ll still get excellent fuel efficiency. With the gas-powered version, you can expect around 30 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway, while the hybrid version delivers 42/48 mpg, respectively. These are very respectable numbers for a car this age. And, since the 2013 Jetta is a little on the older side, you can likely find one at a great price.

2010 Honda Civic Hybrid

Each year, the Honda Civic is one of the most popular vehicles on the road thanks to its combination of affordability and features. It’s a great entry-level vehicle for buyers who don’t want to spend a lot but still want a reliable ride. If you’re looking for an affordable used car that’s still great on gas, you should consider the 2010 Honda Civic Hybrid. This model receives an EPA-estimated 40 mpg in the city and 45 mpg on the highway, meaning it competes well with even some modern-day vehicles.

2010 Toyota Prius

Finally, there’s the Toyota Prius. The Prius was one of the first hybrid vehicles sold in the United States and has since remained one of the more fuel-efficient options on the market each year. What separates the Prius from many other hybrids is that it performs a lot better during city driving as opposed to highway driving. This is partly reflected in its fuel-efficiency ratings, with the EPA estimates coming in at 51 mpg in the city and 48 mpg on the highway. The 2010 Toyota Prius may be over a decade old at this point, but it’s still one of the more fuel-efficient midsize cars available.

What To Look For in Great PG Used Cars

When you’re shopping for a used car, there are a few things you’ll want to consider besides the mpg ratings. It’s essential that you buy a vehicle that’s in good condition and has a history of being taken care of. A vehicle that isn’t properly looked after can lose fuel efficiency, among many other potential problems. The best way to ensure that you’re getting a reliable vehicle is by shopping from a reputable seller and requesting a vehicle history report.
