A Guide to Fully Electric Trucks

January 5th, 2023 by

The 2022 model year saw the emergence of all-electric pickup trucks from GMC, Ford, and Rivian into the electric vehicle (EV) scene. Two more will join the lineup for the 2024 model year from Chevy and GMC, the Silverado EV and Sierra EV. These all-electric trucks offer powerful performance and utility capabilities, making them a perfect choice for today’s drivers. When it’s time to put a new truck in the driveway, consider making it an all-electric one. Our #1 Cochran sales team invites you to learn more about your electric truck options with our guide to fully electric trucks.

Rivian R1T

The 2022 Rivian R1T was not only the first vehicle ever produced by this U.S. startup company but also the first electric truck available for sale. The Rivian R1T is slightly larger than a midsize pickup truck but not as big as a full-size crew cab. You get a large frunk (front trunk), a trapezoidal enclosed cargo area behind the rear seats, a gear tunnel, and a 4.5-foot bed. The 2022 Rivian R1T is only sold in one trim level, Adventure.

You get a 135-kWh battery pack for an EPA-estimated range of 314 miles. A motor for all-wheel drive powers each wheel, producing a combined output of 835 horsepower and 908 lb-ft of torque. The maximum towing capacity for the Adventure is 11,000 pounds. For the 2023 model year, we expect Rivian to produce additional powertrain configurations, including a Max battery pack for 400 miles.

Ford Lightning

The Ford Lightning was also introduced to the auto world for the 2022 model year. For the 2023 model year, the Ford Lighting will offer four trims: Pro, XLT, Lariat, and Platinum. Each trim is only available as a crew cab with a 5.5-foot bed.

The Pro, XLT, and Lariat feature an 89-kWh battery with dual electric motors for all-wheel drive, 452 horsepower, and 775 lb-ft of torque. The EPA-estimated range for the standard battery is 240 miles. A larger 131-kWh battery that delivers 580 horsepower and 775 lb-ft of torque comes standard on the Lariat and Premium and is available on the XLT. The extended battery features an EPA-estimated range of 320 miles.

GMC Hummer EV Sport Utility Truck

GMC also released the Hummer EV Sport Utility Truck (SUT) in 2022 in four trims: EV2, EV2X, EV3X, and Edition 1. GMC released Edition 1 first, and it sold out quickly. Reservations are available for future Hummer EV SUTs, featuring the much-discussed CrabWalk feature with four-wheel steering.

Three electric motors produce 1,000 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque from a 212.7-kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery. All-wheel drive is standard across all four trims of the Hummer EV SUT with an EPA-estimated range of 329 miles on a full charge. The EV2 and EV2X will have a less powerful dual-motor drivetrain when released in 2023 and 2024. You can haul up to 7,500 pounds with the Hummer EV SUT.

Chevrolet Silverado EV

Chevy enters the fully electric truck market with the 2024 Silverado EV , available in six trims: WT (Work Truck), LT, LTZ, Trail Boss, High Country, and RST. It will only be available as a crew cab with a 5.9-foot bed. The Silverado EV features an available Multi-Flex Midgate that lets you expand the bed to 9 feet with the tailgate up or 11 feet with the tailgate down. Chevy will release the RST first, then the WT, with the other trims to follow later in 2024.

Two electric motors power the Silverado EV to produce 510 horsepower with 615 lb-ft of torque on the WT and 664 horsepower with 780 lb-ft of torque on the RST. Each trim features four-wheel steering and all-wheel drive as standard. Chevy estimates for range on a full charge for the Silverado EV is 400 miles and claims you can charge 100 miles in just 10 minutes at a DC Fast Charge station. The WT can tow 8,000 pounds, the RST can haul 10,000, and Chevy reports a 20,000-pound towing capacity on future versions.

GMC Sierra EV

The 2024 GMC Sierra EV will feature the same flexible Ultium platform as the Hummer EV and Silverado EV. This full-sized pickup truck offers a luxurious, fully electric truck option in one trim level, the Denali Edition 1, but the AT4 and Elevation trims are set to follow in 2025. The Sierra EV also offers a Multi-Pro Midgate that expands the 5-foot-9-inch bed to 10-foot-10 inches.

Dual motors enable all-wheel drive and produce 754 horsepower and 785 lb-ft of torque. You can expect to be able to haul up to 9,500 pounds with the Sierra EV and a GMC-estimated range of 400 miles on a full charge. GMC also claims you can charge 100 miles in 10 minutes at a DC Fast Charging station. The Sierra EV features the CrabWalk function for better off-road performance.

Entirely electric trucks are a hot item in today’s automotive industry, so if you’re considering one, you’ll want to get your reservation or order in as soon as possible. With a smaller carbon footprint and traditional truck utility, fully electric trucks offer the best of both worlds. Other options on the horizon include the Tesla Cybertruck, the Lordstown Endurance, the Toyota Tacoma EV, and the Canoo Pickup Truck. Watch for more information on new and upcoming fully electric trucks as they slowly infiltrate the market.
