Buick Electra EV: Everything You Should Know

As the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) continues to enforce more stringent emission standards and the public becomes more aware of the dangers of climate change, the automotive industry is under pressure to develop more sustainable vehicles. Electric vehicles (EVs) are one solution to this problem, and Buick is one of many automakers working on EV models that meet the more stringent emissions standards.

The Buick Electra is one such EV model that is currently in development. While GM has yet to announce the exact release date, many are already eager to get their hands on this car. While we don’t know much about the vehicle yet, here’s what we think you can expect from the 2025 Buick Electra based on current EV technology and rumors and leaks that have been floating around. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.

Buick Revives the Electra Name

After more than two decades, Buick is reviving the Electra name for its future EV lineup. The Electra is not a single model but rather the name for an entire line of future all-electric SUVs. To refresh your memory, the original Buick Electra was a luxury car produced between 1959 and 1990 before being discontinued. The new Electra is based on the Wildcat, another concept car from the company.

The 2025 Electra EV, which may be a swoopy midsize crossover, is Buick’s first EV and is set to hit production in 2024 and debut sometime in 2025. Along with the new badge and design language, future Buick vehicles will come with a standard three years of OnStar and Connected Services Premium Plan.

The Wildcat EV

The Wildcat was solely developed to convey Buick’s new design language that would influence future Buick production models. The tri-shield logo on the body’s front and rear symbolizes the design transformation. New production models will wear the logo starting in 2023. The 2+2 coupe concept car looks powerful and expressive from every angle. It has a laid-back proportion complemented by a low, wide stance. The windshield wraps around and flows into the side glass, tapering dramatically with the fast roofline to accentuate the aggressive profile. Additional exterior design highlights include:

  • Unique semi-swing doors.
  • Jet Age-inspired 18-spoke “turbine” wheels.
  • An external “state of charge” indicator.
  • Micro-LED lighting technology and thin-beam projector lenses for the front lighting.
  • Blade-style taillights in the roof’s sail panels.
  • Unique aluminum trim flows seamlessly into the interior seat structures.

The interior of the Wildcat is just as impressive as the exterior. It boasts a futuristic, high-tech feel with a flat-bottomed steering wheel, floating headrests, and sleek instrumentation. The center console is uncluttered and houses a prominent horizontal screen. Two additional screens are mounted on the front passenger and driver door panels. The screens display images from the camera-based side mirrors to provide an unobstructed view of the surroundings.

2025 Buick Electra: Model Overview

Now that we’ve covered the basics let’s take a more in-depth look at what you can expect from the 2025 Buick Electra.

Powertrain and Performance Specifications

Although we haven’t seen the Electra in action yet, we can make some educated guesses about its powertrain and performance based on what we know about the Lyriq, as the Ultium electric powertrain will reportedly be shared between the two models. If you need a refresher, the Cadillac Lyriq will share its platform with the Electra. The Lyriq makes 325 lb-ft of torque and 340 ponies from its dual electric motors. The Buick Electra will likely offer similar, if not identical, performance figures.

And based on rumors floating around, the Electra will be capable of accelerating from zero to 60 mph in less than 4.5 seconds, thanks to the Ultium platform’s incredible power output and all-wheel-drive system. Built with a futuristic approach, the all-wheel-drive system will independently control the torque at each wheel for maximum traction and stability.

Battery Range and Charging

Given what we know about the all-electric SUV market and what the Lyriq offers, the Buick Electra’s range will likely fall between 250 and 300 miles on a single charge. These figures also hinge on the size of the battery pack offered, which, if you guessed correctly, will be around 100 kWh. And again, this is with the understanding that the Lyriq and Electra will share GM’s new Ultium platform.

As for charging, the Electra will come standard with GM’s new 350-kilowatt DC fast-charging system, which can add up to 100 miles of range in eight to 12 minutes. With this system, the Electra will be able to charge at a rate of up to 30 miles per minute, which is on par with Tesla’s supercharging network.

Interior and Exterior Styling

The Buick Electra will boast a sleek, futuristic design with plenty of unique exterior and interior styling cues heavily influenced by the Wildcat EV Concept design. Expect to see plenty of angular lines, a long wheelbase, and short overhangs. The Electra will most likely feature unique aluminum trim that flows seamlessly into the interior seat structures. State-of-the-art features will also dominate the interior, so expect nothing less than a high-tech, luxurious cabin, including a flat-bottomed steering wheel, floating headrests, and sleek instrumentation from what we’ve seen in the Wildcat EV Concept.

Models and Price

Rumor has it that GM will offer the upcoming 2025 Buick Electra in three different trim levels, with a single electric motor powering the base model and dual electric motors offered in higher trims for all-wheel drive. As for pricing, the base model will likely start at an estimated MSRP of $50,000, while higher trims could cost upwards of $70,000 MSRP. We’ll update this section as more information becomes available closer to the Electra’s official release date.

The long-awaited 2025 Buick Electra is shaping up to be an impressive all-electric SUV. With its sleek design, advanced powertrain, and luxurious interior, the Electra will be a force to be reckoned with when it finally hits dealerships.
