The big change for the Chevy Silverado 1500 in 2023 is under the hood. The optional six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine has gained even more power. It has added 28 horsepower for a maximum output of 305 horsepower and increased torque by 35 lb-ft for an upper limit of 495 lb-ft of torque. These improvements make the turbo-diesel a great choice if you want to combine fuel efficiency with towing prowess.

Another new addition for the Silverado 1500 is a Radiant Red paint color. Other new Chevy Silverado colors include Sterling Gray Metallic and Harvest Bronze Metallic. Popular colors returning for 2023 include Dark Ash Metallic, Black, and Glacier Blue Metallic.

The Silverado HD remains virtually unchanged for the 2023 model year, including its incredible towing limit of 36,000 pounds. Heavy-duty fans will be excited to hear that Chevy is planning a styling makeover for the 2500 HD and 3500 HD for the 2024 model year.

What Engine Does the 2023 Silverado Have?

There are four main engine options for you to consider in the Silverado 1500. The base unit is a turbocharged four-cylinder that puts out 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. The first of two V-8 options is a 5.3-liter engine capable of 355 horsepower. The larger V-8 is a 6.2-liter powerhouse with 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. It propels this big truck from zero to 60 mph in an incredibly quick 5.4 seconds. Finally, there’s the upgraded turbo-diesel, which is great for towing heavy loads.

The standout engine offered in Silverado HD models is an eight-cylinder turbo-diesel that churns out a magnificent 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque.

If you prioritize fuel economy in the Silverado 1500, the best engine is the turbo-diesel. It returns 33 mpg on the highway in rear-wheel drive or 26 mpg with all-wheel drive. By contrast, the large V-8 gets 21 mpg on the highway and 16 mpg on city roads.

Infotainment and Safety Features

The base infotainment system in the Silverado 1500 includes helpful features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth connectivity. If you upgrade to the larger 13.4-inch touchscreen, you gain wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a WiFi hotspot, and wireless device charging. You can also choose from premium six-speaker or seven-speaker stereos to replace the two-speaker base sound system.

Each 2023 Silverado has a large number of useful safety features, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane keep assist. The Double Cab has smaller rear doors and less legroom in the second row than the full-sized Crew Cab. The Double Cab will probably be adequate if you generally carry kids in the second row or adults on short journeys. For more luxury, the Crew Cab offers significantly more rear-row legroom.

The top towing capacity in the Silverado 1500 is 13,300 pounds. You can access this impressive limit with the 6.2-liter V-8 engine. All engines provide more than enough towing capability for most drivers, with even the base turbo-four offering a solid 9,500 pounds. When it comes to payload in its cargo bed, the Silverado 1500 can carry up to 2,280 pounds.

If you need a higher towing capacity, you’ll want to look to the Silverado HD models. With a gas-powered engine, Chevy’s heavy-duty trucks can tow up to 17,400 pounds, while their diesel-powered versions manage 36,000 pounds. The 3,500 HD is best for hauling cargo, with a maximum payload of 7,442 pounds.

How Much Will the 2023 ZR2 Silverado Cost?

The Silverado 1500 is offered in various trims, starting with the Work Truck and Custom. These trims are ideal for tradespeople who want to use a full-sized pickup as a work truck. They have a starting price of around $35,000 and have all the basics a work truck needs, including the extra-long cargo bed.
