Trim Levels and Prices
The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 comes in eight trim levels to cater to the needs of different truck buyers: the base Pro, the SLE, the Elevation, the SLT, the off-road-oriented AT4 and AT4X, the Denali, and the range-topping Denali Ultimate. The Pro is a renamed version of the previous year’s base model, and the AT4X and Denali Ultimate are new additions. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price of the Sierra 1500 varies greatly from one model to another. The Pro starts at $32,495, while the Denali Ultimate sets you back at least $80,395.
Interior
The seating capacity of the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 varies depending on the body style. A Regular Cab model can seat only three people, whereas the Double Cab and Crew Cab can accommodate up to six. Regardless of the cab configuration, the truck offers roomy and comfortable front seats that provide excellent outward visibility.
Even the base model has a well-built interior with an abundance of premium materials. Interior quality improves significantly as you climb the trim ladder. If you opt for the AT4X, you’ll get perforated leather seats with white piping, a steering wheel with red and white stitching, and brushed aluminum accent pieces. The Denali Ultimate gives luxury vehicles a run for their money with supple leather-wrapped surfaces, open-pore wood trim, and two-tone leather front seats with 16-way power adjustability and massage function.
Fuel Economy
The most fuel-efficient engine of the GMC Sierra is the optional diesel engine, which is rated at 23/30 mpg (city/highway). If you choose a model with the 6.2-liter V-8 and all-wheel drive, you’ll get 16/20 mpg. The smaller V-8 is less frugal than the larger one, returning only 14/18 mpg with all-wheel drive.
Power
If you decide to buy the 2022 GMC Sierra, you have four engines to choose from. Rated at 310 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, the standard engine is a revised version of last year’s 2.7-liter turbo-four that produces 20% more torque. It works with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
For more power, you can opt for the 5.3-liter V-8 with 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque or the 6.2-liter V-8 with 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. The AT4X and Denali Ultimate come standard with the larger V-8 and four-wheel drive. Also available is a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel inline-six that produces 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. This unit has been upgraded for a higher tow rating, which now stands at 13,200 pounds. Previously, a diesel-powered Sierra could only pull 9,200 pounds. These three engines pair with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Handling
Although it’s a large vehicle, the GMC Sierra 1500 is capable of delivering a smooth and relaxing ride, even over potholes and bumps. It’s also surprisingly easy to maneuver and park, which makes it a good urban commuter. Unlike some trucks that lean to one side when tackling corners, this GMC model feels well-planted and poised in most situations. Overall, the Sierra is one of the best-handling full-size pickup trucks on the market.
If you frequently venture off the pavement, you’ll be better off getting the AT4 or AT4X. The AT4 is fitted with special features such as an off-road-tuned suspension, a two-speed transfer case, hill descent control, and skid plates. The best off-roader in the Sierra lineup is the AT4X, which is equipped with electronic locking front and rear differentials, Multimatic spool-valve dampers, a Terrain mode that enables one-pedal driving, additional underbody protection, and gnarly mud-terrain tires.
Exterior
From the front, the new GMC Sierra 1500 looks decidedly more modern and dynamic than its predecessor. The truck features a revised grille that doesn’t have a thick surround and split-C headlamps that come to life when you approach the vehicle. Other than that, the exterior design has been largely carried over. The Sierra continues to exude a bold and commanding presence with its imposing stance and chiseled bodywork. The 2022 GMC Sierra colors offer a wide variety of options to suit all types of truck enthusiasts.
The AT4X sets itself apart from the other trims with an exclusive dark nickel-finish grille with AT4X badging and gloss-black skid plates. The Denali Ultimate, on the other hand, wears a distinctive “Vader chrome” grille with dark GMC badging, 22-inch wheels, and chrome skid plates.
Infotainment Features
Another notable update of the 2022 GMC Sierra is the addition of a 13.4-inch infotainment display and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, which are standard on every trim except the Pro. The Pro is fitted with a 7-inch touch-screen display, a USB port, Bluetooth, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a six-speaker sound system.
For a better experience, choose a higher trim to gain access to available features such as voice recognition, navigation, HD radio, satellite radio, extra USB ports, a Wi-Fi hot spot, a wireless device charger, and a seven-speaker Bose audio system.
Safety Features
The new GMC Sierra comes with plenty of driver-assistance technologies to help you stay safe on the road. If you opt for the base model, you’ll get only a rearview camera and teen-driver monitoring.
